The old cedar fence leaned

Against the winter wind

With a weary sigh.

When it was young and strong

It held the youthful colts,

Discouraged the persistent

And painful thistles,

Encompassed ambitious schemes,

And guarded the hopeful farm.

Now it sags with disappointment,

Grief, and generations of memory.
