Naked November maples
Stand with bare limbs raised,
Imploring heaven
To dress them.

My Last Pansy

Jack Frost stopped by last night
Wielding his wintry wand,
Touching all the flowers
Of which I had grown fond.
The bright dahlias fainted,
The dainty asters swooned,
Sunflowers bent their heads
While the east wind crooned.
Yet one purple pansy
Remained steadfast, alert,
Tucked in the rock garden
In its warm bed of dirt.
Did Jack Frost miss it?
Was he just being kind –
Leaving a memento
Of sweet summer behind?

First Frost

Crisp brown leaves now litter the lawn
Rimed by frost in the early dawn.
The dahlias bend, their flowers curl,
Sagging low, as around them swirl
The icy whispers of winter.
Our church crafting group makes some decorations and cards for our local nursing home. These are some cats I have made for this Thanksgiving/Halloween craft fest. I made them out of socks I bought at a dollar store, using left over felt, buttons and some bright orange ribbon.

Krazy Cats aren’t pretty but they have lots of personality. I do notice I have a few threads to snip and for some reason orange appears pink…hmm. I plan to name the Kats and decorate the boxes they are sitting in. Hopefully the seniors who receive them will have a smile.

I can’t wait for the ladies to try the hats on! It has been so much fun to prepare these bonnets.
As part of our Canada’s 150th celebration, our church is planning an 1867 Victorian High Tea for those women in our community who are bereaved. Part of the festivities will be the wearing of decorated hats and bonnets for the occasion. We decorated summer straw hats for the event and then I had an idea for some pretty bonnets made from the round woven placemats I saw in the dollar store. This is the result:
Completed bonnet with lace and flower trim.
Unadorned placemat.

Pleated back forming a crown for the bonnet.
The bonnet pleated inside and sewn down.
Side view of bonnet.
I hand sewed on the lace, ribbon and trim, but the lace and ribbon could be sewn by sewing machine and the flowers could be hot-glued in place.
It is nearly fall now as all the phlox are in bloom in our garden.

The Gardener

I passed a field of sunflowers
Glowing in the golden light,
Basking in joyous sunbeams,
And it gave my heart delight.
I passed beds of sweet roses
And happy bees were dancing there.
They were drinking in the nectar,
So I breathed in my fair share.
I passed some calla lilies,
So pure and full of holy grace
That I knew God was the Gard’ner
Who had made each sacred place.

The yellow dahlia is as large as a dinner plate! Every day there are new discoveries in the garden.

A Candle Burning

A candle burning in the dark night
Cannot outshine my Saviour’s light.
The greatest bonfire and its glow
Compared to Jesus, will not show.
The brightest beams from our big sun
Cannot eclipse the Blessed One.
The love light from my Saviour’s eyes
Is kind, and caring, always wise.
He sees my weakness, knows my fears,
Has helped me stand and dried my tears.
And when my task here is complete,
You’ll find me sitting at his feet.
